Rosacea Skin Care Treatments - Intense Pulsed Light

Examples of rosacea treatments include laser and Intense Pulsed Light treatments. Laser are well known for removing unwanted hair and for some medical conditions and for the removal of tattoos and dark spots on the skin. Another technique related to this is the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which is used to treat skin conditions either on its own or in combination with laser treatments.

IPL can be used to treat the redness of the skin often experienced by rosacea sufferers. Lasers produce light of a single wavelength but IPL instruments produce a pulse of light in a carefully controlled range of wavelengths. IP is often used to treat the redness of skin followed by the use of lasers to treat larger swollen blood vessels that may be present on the chin, cheeks and nose. After a few treatment with IPL many people report that they blush much less readily.

Redness of the facial skin can make people embarrassed and awkward in social and business situations and if it is very severe can have a marked effect on people's social and working lives. In addition many people associate redness and the appearance of visible blood vessels on the skin as signs of alcoholic abuse and this can be very distressing for sufferers of rosacea.

Although IPL is a 'cosmetic' treatment, removing the redness and visible blood vessels is very important for the mental well being of many rosacea patients. Rosacea sufferers should always be careful to protect their skin from the sun as this can make the redness and irritation worse.

IPL can also be used to remove freckles, liver spots and brown residue and markedly improves the appearance of skin damaged by the sun or from aging. Many people have a much better mental outlook after treatment, start to look after themselves better and generally have a more positive outlook on life.

Rosacea Symptoms

Rosacea is a common condition that affects mostly caucasians but can affect members of other races. The first symptom is usually redness and flushing, known as erythema, of the cheeks, forehead and nose but occasionally it may affect the scalp, ears, chest and neck. After the first symptoms appear there are a number of other symptoms that my develop including a semi permanent erythema, small red bumps called papules and pustules, irritable red eyes, dilation of surface blood vessels of the face, known as telangiectasia and stinging or burning sensations inthe affected areas.

Rosacea is often mistaken for acne vulgaris or seborrhoeic dermatitis although it can also exist at the same time as these conditions. Rosacea is primarily a condition affecting the face so symptoms appearing in other areas suggest either a different diagnosis or another condition present at the same time as rosacea.

Rosacea can affect both men and women but it is much more common in women and affects mainly those between the ages of thirty and sixty. people with fair skin that has a tendency to blush or flush easily are thought to be at most risk. Although more women develop rosacea symptoms can be more severe for men. A famous male sufferer of rosacea was W.C.Fields who developed a bumpy swollen nose, a condition known as rhinophyma.

There is no known cause of rosacea and to date there is no cure. There are treatments to relieve the symptoms however and anyone who suspects they have rosacea should consult a dermatologist. Many rosacea skin care products are available that are specially formulated to be gentle in the sensitive and often irritated skin of a rosacea sufferer.
